Shoutbox?

Postby disconnect » Tue Sep 23, 2008 7:38 pm

Hey, I think it would be nice if this site had a shoutbox :)

There is no need for even more clutter. Its fine as it, if you wanna talk, use the Forum chat or IRC.

I see your point, we'll stick to useful modules like calenders, clocks, and site stats hahah. :)

I just thought it would be a nice idea since this gungame site has a feel of a "community" site now, and most communities have shoutboxes on their sites for people to say hello without having to start an entire thread. I think we can all agree, this has grown beyond a site to support a plugin. ;)

Anywho, just a suggestion.

I think a shoutbox is a pretty good idea. Sc0pE had shown me one and I suggested it would be fine to put it in. Then we tried to get the chat app to work but a shout box would be cool.

The shoutboxes that I have seen are unmoderated. I don't care for the idea. Also, I am moving this post as it is in the wrong section.

There are quite a few shoutbox mods out for Phpbb3, but I'll just list one of the better ones that can be found here (Phpbb3 site). You can delete messages/edit them, etc.

I like them too. Gives a feel that a site has visitors.

Also idle chatter encourages participation even on a small scale, then people can work up some courage to then ask some big questions/requests in their own threads.

Making people feel comfortable is a good thing in a community.

But yea, shoutboxes need to be moderated :P

I couldn't find a working shout box for phpbb3. Please link me to one if it looks good and is for phpbb3.

You can also use the one we are using for chat now as a shout box. Check the docs that came with it.

The one linked from above is for phpbb2. It is mislabeled.

Here's a line from the install.xml file from that file:
This MOD was designed for phpBB3.0 and may not function as stated on other phpBB versions.

I've attached it here in case you can't find the link.

Let me know if you don't want to install it and I will.

The install file is really messed up. It is not the standard phpbb3 install file and none of the finds match up with phpbb3 correctly. I will try again, but not all of the finds it mentions exist as mentioned.
